Volvo V70 Gets Sporty

8 May 2008

From May 2008, the new Volvo V70 will be available in R-DESIGN specification, adding a new appealing dimension to Volvo's ultimate estate car. The refined V70 R-DESIGN package combines sporty visual features with a specially tuned lowered sports chassis and sharper driving characteristics to offer customers the practicality of a large estate, with more dynamic handling and distinctive styling.

Available to order now, first cars arrive in the UK in August, with prices starting from £26,745 for the V70 2.0 petrol R-DESIGN.

Dynamic driving characteristics
The new V70 R-DESIGN delivers an enhanced, sportier drive. The sports chassis has been optimised with the help of features such as stiffer anti-roll bars and bushings, and a lower ground clearance (20mm at the front, 15mm at the rear) for more direct road contact to deliver more responsive and rewarding steering feedback.

"The big challenge with this project and the R-DESIGN chassis was to combine crisp driving pleasure with Volvo's renowned secure properties in poor road conditions, such as heavy rain or snow. I'm convinced we've found exactly the right balance," says Ekkehard Schwartz, Vice President Chassis and Vehicle Dynamics.

Refined sports styling
Sports-inspired styling gives the R-DESIGN a desirable, unique look both inside and out. The R-DESIGN badge is displayed in the silver matt-finish front grille and the car also features silver matt door mirrors, unique chrome exhaust pipes and a colour coordinated rear spoiler. Unique 18" Cratus alloy wheels complete the V70 R-DESIGN exterior.

Inside the car, leather-faced sports upholstery in off-black and cream is embossed with the R-DESIGN logo, while the front seats offer greater stability and side support. The package also adds an R-DESIGN leather steering wheel and unique aluminium interior trim, including sports pedals and centre stack. The new instrument dials with blue inserts and sports gearlever all add to the dynamic interior look and feel.

2009 Model Year updates
Across the Volvo V70 range, two new exterior colours; Savile Grey Pearl and Caper Green Pearl1, have been added at this model year, as well as new five spoke 17-inch Cassini alloy wheels.

Volvo's RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment system) has also been updated and now features larger eight-inch flat-screen monitors built into the front seat headrests. A Digital TV option is also available, which enables passengers to watch Freeview channels as well as providing a cardslot that can be used for subscription services. Other RSE features include an integrated DVD player, wireless headphones and remote control. An extra socket means it is possible to connect an additional DVD player or video game so the two screens can then be used independently. The RSE system is available for £1,350 RRP and the additional Digital TV option is £400 RRP.

Prices
There are minimal price changes to the Volvo V70 range, with the SE Lux models increasing in price by up to £380 in line with the added specification (Active bending headlamps, heated washer nozzles and chronograph instrument dials as standard).  The new R-DESIGN variants are positioned £1,750 above the standard SE trim.
