Volvo S40 UK Debut at Scottish Motor Show

20 October 2003

The all-new Volvo S40 saloon makes its UK debut at the Scottish Motor Show at the SECC, Glasgow from 7 – 16 November. The new S40 is joined on the Volvo stand (Hall 5, stand number 5009) by Volvo’s larger saloons – the recently face-lifted S80 and the S60 compact executive saloon, plus the award-winning V70 estate and the sought after XC90.

All-new S40
The all-new Volvo S40 takes an important step in terms of design, style, desirability and competitiveness, and has all the large car features from Volvo’s S60 and S80 saloons in a premium compact format

From the outside, the new Volvo S40 is unmistakably a modern Volvo with its strong, stylish design, while the interior is quite a revolution, with an ultra-slim centre console that appears to be free-floating – the first of its kind in the automotive world – creating extra storage space behind it and an aura of Scandinavian style, exclusivity and space

Volvo introduces IDIS – Intelligent Driver Information System – in the new Volvo S40, which helps the driver from being distracted by delaying non-essential signals and information when full attention is required.   The Volvo S40’s safety is improved with a stronger, reinforced body with 68 per cent greater torsional rigidity, and larger side airbags to provide more effective protection at hip and chest height, while the new S40’s added width creates extra space for the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) to work more effectively.

The new Volvo S40 will offer a comprehensive range of engines.  Available from launch are Volvo’s five cylinder petrol engines - 2.4i 170bhp and T5 220bhp – plus a new four cylinder 2.0D 136bhp diesel engine.  A 125bhp 1.8 petrol engine joins the line-up in spring 2004, followed by a 1.6 100bhp petrol and 1.6D 110bhp diesel next winter.

  • Prices for the all-new Volvo S40 will be released later this year
  • The present S40 remains in production with a reduced range of engines until June 2004
  • The all-new Volvo S40 will be unveiled on 7 November on the Volvo stand at 10am by Hugh Reid, Managing Director, Volvo Car UK Ltd
  • John Lefley & Sarah Atkins from the Volvo press office will be available at the show on Press Day (7 November)
