Frequently Asked Questions for S80's (model up to 2005)

Reset service light

Turn the ignition switch to position 1, then push and hold in the odometer trip button while turning the switch to position 2. After a few seconds the service light will flash, release the trip button then.

Radio code

There is no code for the HU series of radios, however they are ‘linked’ to the car through software settings. If you change the radio it will require ‘assigning’ to the car.

Radio removal

Using a blunt object, lever up the plastic surround around the gear level (it will help to move the lever out of park). You can then see two screws holding the switch panel, remove these. This is the tricky bit – carefully pull the switch panel (this includes the air con etc.. controls above) forward at the bottom, and pull the whole thing down. It can take a bit of force. You can then see the radio fixings, and these can be removed and the radio pulled forward. More working room is gained by removing the switch panel by disconnecting the cables, but ensure the battery is first disconnected (see SRS below). Replacement is the reverse sequence, again getting the panel back in can be a little tricky, be careful not to damage any of the small fixings.

Service schedule

These have changed slightly during the life of the model, details available on Volvo web site: http://www.volvocars.co.uk/VolvoOwnership/VolvoService/

An example copy of a schedule can be found here: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/s80/s80_service.pdf

Change settings

There are a large number of settings that can be altered, unfortunately only through software which requires a dealer to connect up with VADIS. This may result in a charge, but I’d hope if the dealer is doing a service or other work for you at the time, then it would be free.

These are the settings that can be changed:

            CEM (Central Electronic Module)

1. Seat Temp: Celsius or Fahrenheit, from 32 degrees to 109.4 (F)
2. Courtesy Light: 0, 30, 60, 90 seconds, I think this includes the follow-me-home.
3. Warning Lamps (DRL):
-a) Dipped lights on all positions except park (default)
-b) Off, park, dipped on, (old style you select whats on)
-c) dipped on all three positions.
Note: Canadian Market Must have DRL.

DIM (Drivers Information Module)
1. New meter indications in KM or Miles
2. Conditions for the SRL (service Reminder Light)
-Distance: 2500,5000,7500(default),10000
-Service Time: 6,12(default),18,24 Months
-Engine Hours: 500, 750(default),1000 Hours.
3. Instrument Display: Leading zeros, or set for Hidden.
4. Temp Unit: select celsius or fahrenheit
5. Trip Computer: Gallons, Liters, GB gallons
6. 12 or 24 Hour clock

UEM (Upper Electronic Module)
1. Time for courtesy Lighting
-Door Lock or engine switched off 0-255 seconds (15sec intervals)
-Door Open time to light off 0-255 seconds.
2. Mirror Dimming can be changed but requires a software download from Volvo.

ETM

This stands for ‘Electronic Throttle Module’ and has been the source of a lot of problems around the world. I don’t really have enough information to provide anything very authoritive here, so recommend you research the latest situation via a number of internet forums (recommend both VOC and VolvoSpy.com), or hopefully find a dealer that will investigate any problem rather than just change things (at your expense) until the problem goes away.

Recalls

There have been a few (tow bar, suspension bushes, cooling fan) – the best advice is to consult a dealer how will be able to check against your particular chassis number.

Handbook

You can buy most things from your friendly dealer’s parts department, and this includes the usual car handbook. If you’re looking for more of a repair manual, then the soon to be published Haynes manual (covering latest V70 models as well) may be the answer. (Haynes are due to publish in March - ISBN 1844252693. Its book number 4263 in the series and listed at £16.)

Ipod adaptor

The genuine Volvo adaptor is now available in the UK, and where you already have SatNav fitted, you can connect it all up in about 5 minutes. The instructions do say to run the cable for the IPOD to the armrest – I haven’t bothered on my car as that clearly would take a little longer, and I’m happy for my IPOD to just sit in the boot. Essentialy it acts in place of a 10 CD changer. You can select any of 9 playlists (previously set up on the IPOD) on scroll through your complete collection. You just get track numbers on the display (as with a CD).

RTI cd/dvd

The current system uses DVD, and I understand there are 2 updates a year. All the DVD systems are already enabled for the traffic information service, but you may need to buy an update to get it to work.

SRS warning light

The warning “SRS Service required” can easily get trigged by disconnecting wires or even by removing fuses, without first having disconnected the battery. You can only get it reset by a dealer through VADIS.

Emissions

The warning light or an ‘emissions service required’ message can come up without there being a real problem. Some members have reported having incorrectly replaced the fuel cap after refuelling has caused this warning. Make sure you always turn the fuel cap once or twice to ensure its on properly.

ABS

Another warning that comes on, often with the emission light as well. It appears that the main cause is a failure within the ABS module (the electronics bit). This is an expensive item to replace, and there are one or two people that offer to ‘refurbish’ them. Others have investigated further, and it seems that there can be small breaks in the printed circuit board tracks (which can be repaired by some careful soldering) or by failures of the main power transistors. Again, these can be replaced by someone with soldering skills. There are a number of threads on the VolvoSpy.com forum which gives more details.
