What is XML RSS?

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication and Rich Site Summary. RSS is an XML-based format for content distribution. Webmasters create an RSS file containing headlines and descriptions of specific information. While the majority of RSS feeds currently contain news headlines or breaking information the long term uses of RSS are broad.

RSS is a defined standard based on XML with the specific purpose of delivering updates to web-based content. Using this standard, webmasters provide headlines and fresh content in a succinct manner. Meanwhile, consumers use RSS readers and news aggregators to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one centralized program or location. Content viewed in the RSS reader or news aggregator is place known as an RSS feed.

RSS is becoming increasing popular. The reason is fairly simple. RSS is a free and easy way to promote a site and its content without the need to advertise or create complicated content sharing partnerships.

How can I view RSS feeds?

At present the only web browsers that can display XML-RSS feeds are FireFox 2, MS Internet Explorer 7 and Safari 2. These three browsers use a technology known as Auto Discovery and detect if a web page has RSS feeds available from that page.

   
If you have these browsers you will see one of the above icons (orange icon in FF2 and IE7; blue icon in Safari). These icons will be active on any page that has RSS feeds available. By clicking on that icon you will be able to view the feed. There may be more than one feed available and that will be indicated by a small inverted triangle that will drop down a list of the feeds.

RSS feeds are also available on a web site (like ours) if you see icons like these - . Clicking on the icon will display the RSS feed.

To view XML-RSS feeds if you have any other browser you will need an RSS Feed Viewer. There are many of these if you put 'RSS Feed Viewer' in your favourite search engine. Many are free. Using these viewers you can put the URL (web address) of all your favourite feeds in and view them quickly.
